RO vs UV vs UF

By SACHSTAR · Editorial update: 9 October 2026

The short answer

RO and UF use membranes to filter water. UV uses ultraviolet light to disinfect; it is not a physical filter. The appropriate combination depends on the contaminants present and the verified performance of the system.

RO: reverse osmosis

RO pushes water through a membrane under pressure. It can reduce many dissolved salts and certain other contaminants, but the exact reduction depends on the system and operating conditions. It produces a separate concentrated reject stream. Confirm any performance claim against the exact manufacturer specification.

UV: ultraviolet disinfection

UV exposes water to light to inactivate microorganisms. It does not remove dissolved salts, sediment or chemical contaminants. Cloudiness can interfere with light reaching microorganisms, so pretreatment and correct operation matter. UV does not provide a persistent disinfectant residual after treatment.

UF: ultrafiltration

UF passes water through a membrane that removes suspended material and some microorganisms. It generally does not reduce dissolved salts. Microbial removal varies with membrane specifications and system integrity; do not assume every UF unit removes every virus.

How to compare a combined system

  • Identify the actual water-quality concern first.
  • Ask which stage addresses each identified concern.
  • Check the exact model’s performance documentation and operating limits.
  • Confirm cartridge, membrane and UV-lamp maintenance requirements.
  • Do not infer safe water from a longer stage count or from taste alone.
