Domestic vs Commercial RO

By SACHSTAR · Editorial update: 9 October 2026

The short answer

Household and commercial RO systems differ mainly in water demand, rated output, storage, installation and maintenance arrangements. Choose from measured site requirements rather than using the word commercial as a quality guarantee.

Measure demand before capacity

Estimate drinking and other intended water use, then identify the busiest period. Daily demand and hourly peak demand are different. Production ratings are measured under stated operating conditions and may differ at your site; storage and refill time also matter.

Installation changes with scale

  • Inlet pressure and pretreatment needs.
  • Space, power, drain route and service access.
  • Treated-water storage and distribution hygiene.
  • Reject-water handling and planned operating hours.

Service and operational responsibility

A business should identify who monitors the system, keeps test and service records, and arranges work. Confirm maintenance requirements, downtime and parts support before buying. Any site-specific water-quality or legal requirements should be checked with the relevant qualified adviser.

Compare written quotations

Ask for rated output with its operating conditions, the actual treatment components, pretreatment, storage, installation scope and consumable costs. A larger nominal rating alone does not establish that a system meets your water-quality needs.
