RO Maintenance Guide
By SACHSTAR · Editorial update: 9 October 2026
The short answer
Maintain a purifier by following its manual, keeping a service record and acting on changes in performance. Filter, membrane and disinfection-stage requirements vary by model; there is no universal schedule for every RO system.
A practical routine
- Keep the exterior and dispensing area clean using the manufacturer’s method.
- Check visible tubing and the surrounding area for leaks.
- Record changes in filling speed, noise, taste or alerts.
- Maintain the fitted-component and replacement-date record.
- Keep drain and service access clear without altering connections yourself.
Scheduled professional work
Follow the manufacturer’s intervals for filter changes, membrane assessment, UV-lamp servicing and tank sanitisation where applicable. Ask how periods of non-use should be handled. Cleaning the outside of the unit is not the same as sanitising its internal tank or lines.
When to stop and seek help
Stop using a leaking or electrically faulty unit. If safe, isolate its inlet and electrical supply and arrange inspection. Do not open powered housings or put unapproved chemicals into the tank. Use a known safe water source when contamination is suspected.
Plan for ongoing costs
Request the cost of the actual fitted consumables and typical labour visits. A maintenance plan should name the included work and exclusions. Keep the service report so future diagnoses can use the unit’s actual history.
